OSSF Drainfield Calculations

Learn OSSF drainfield calculation basics for Texas Installer I exam prep, including trench area, sidewall area, excavation area, width, length, and gallons per day.

Drainfield math is mostly unit control

Most Installer I calculation questions are not hard math. They test whether you understand the shape, the dimensions, and whether the problem wants bottom area only or bottom plus sidewall area.

Common calculation patterns

Question typeApproach
Three trenches, each 24 inches wide and 90 feet longConvert 24 inches to 2 feet, then multiply 2 × 90 × 3.
Two excavations, each 16 feet wide and 24 feet longMultiply 16 × 24 × 2.
Minimum trench lengthRequired area ÷ trench width, then adjust for number of trenches.
House sewer fallPipe length × required fall per foot.

Study tip

Write every dimension in feet before you start. If the question gives inches, convert immediately. This one habit prevents most wrong answers.
